2012 Preview: New England Patriots

Usually the New England Patriots have a quiet off season.  As usual they had an impressive draft acquiring many players that will help their last place 2011 defense.  But it seems as if one of the team’s offensive weapons is having some financial issues, and not afraid to talk about it openly, which is a known Patriot no-no.  Wes Welker, coming off his best statistical year, is in a contract dispute.  It was a good sign, when the Patriots signed Welker to the franchise tender.  But when Welker told the media that negations had gotten worse, it didn’t sit well with the Pats brass. Not the usual quiet off season for the New England Patriots.  With a great draft and a relatively easy schedule, many pick the Patriots to repeat as the AFC representative in the Super Bowl.  Here is a look at the upcoming season for New England:

Fantasy Football Studs:  TE Rob Gronkowski had a MONSTER season in 2011–90 catches and 1327 yards to be specific.  TE Aaron Hernandez is not to shabby either with 79 catches and 910 yards.  Tom still loves throwing to WR Wes Welker, the recipient of 122 catches and 1359 yards.  The difference between the 2 TEs and WR? Gronkowski had a crucial 17 TDs!  None of this could happen without the Patriots leader and top weapon: Tom Brady.  I dont’ have to convince you but just incase, how does 5325 yards and 39 TDs sound? Stories of QBs and RBs..Week 9

Oddly enough, Peyton Manning is not the Manning that boldly faces Tom Brady and pulls out a huge W…it’s Eli.  I’ve been the first to criticize Eli in the past (heck, just this summer).  I have to admit he’s playing better than he ever has before.  If someone told me a QB in that game would come back with a game winning drive, I (like the rest of you) would have assumed that QB would be Tom Brady.  Eli was great yesterday.  Additionally, Tom Coughlin and that Giants DEF simply have Tom Brady’s number.  Speaking of DEF, it didn’t hurt Eli was going against the worst Defense in the league.  Who thought one could ever write that about a Bill Belichik Defense?

I cannot tell you the emotional rollercoaster that Philip Rivers put me through yesterday.  I made a prediction earlier in the day that said Green Bay would get its first loss due to the hot hand of Rivers, resulting in a breakout performance.  It started off pretty well too.  He quickly hooked up with Vincent Jackson for a quick score, and things were looking great.  But then Rivers happened again!  He threw, not one, BUT two Pick 6s.  I hadn’t seen anything like since the QB from my favorite team did it against the Lions, earlier this season.  I yelled and screamed and vowed that this guy would never see my Fantasy lineups again.  But things took a turn that I’ve been waiting for all season.  He threw another TD, and another, and ANOTHER, totaling 4 TDs along with 385 yards.  He did throw another pick to make it league leading 14 for the year, but I got 35 points from him yesterday.  I AM NOT MAD AT THAT!

He Said: What’s up Philip Rivers?

Last season, I made a huge argument that Philip Rivers needed to be strongly considered for NFL MVP.  Yeah, I knew he wouldn’t win, mainly because San Diego was so bad.  But despite how terrible the Chargers were, Rivers had one his best year statistically, and had numbers that rivaled Brady, Manning, and Vick.  He threw for over 4700 yards and 30 TDs compared to the actual MVP, Tom Brady, who threw for 3900 yards and 36 TDs.  I wrote during the off season that Rivers was going to have a huge year and based on that assessment, he was bound for and MVP-like year, AND that he was going to be a must for your Fantasy line-ups.  I targeted this guy in all of my Fantasy drafts, nabbing him in two of my leagues.  I was sure that Rivers was going to lead me to another Fantasy championship……

Man, was I wrong!

This guy has been killing me and other owners Fantasy owners all across the world who felt as I felt.  Rivers has just to have a good all around game.  I will admit, he’s doing a decent job in yardage (averaging almost 300 yards per game)  but I’m in standard scoring leagues.  Touchdowns are paramount.  And speaking of TDs, in 7 games, he’s hit paydirt just 7 times.  In 2 of the games, he put up a DONUT!  That’s not gonna win you many Fantasy matchups.  Now all of sudden, Rivers has a turnover problem.  He already has 11 INTs.  He had 13 all last year.  And he’s fumbled 6 times losing 3 to the opposing teams.  This is not the guy that I championed last year for MVP.  This is not the guy I bragged about this summer as an elite QB.  This is not the guy I thought I was drafting in my Fantasy leagues.  Who is this guy/  I will tell you:  He’s a BUST, right along with Chris Johnson, Ocho, and Peyton Hillis.  But what do I do?  Do I ride it out with this guy, or am I forced to turn to Andy Dalton or Mark Sanchez?  You see what you do to me Philip Rivers!!!!  I’m a defending champion that was trying to make it to the playoffs.  (PLAYOFFS?!?! I’m just trying to win a game!!!!)  Who out here feels my pain?  Am I overreacting……

He’s Mad…She’s Mad…and Nobody Knows ANYTHING in Week 8

Let me tell you how yesterday was supposed to go:   church,  finishing touches on our fantasy lineups, and Sunday Pre-game shows on ESPN/NFL Network.  She was “wishing” the Redskins would pull out a win and I was certain my Cowboys would pull out a win.  Well…none of that happened.  Continue reading

A Broken Leg, a QB Change, a Scuffle, and Friendly Fans…Week 6

Once again, yesterday started off much the same as most Sundays during the NFL season do:  mixed with nervous optimism and excitement all at once.  We chose to hang out at Buffalo Wild Wings to take in the action.  We knew there would be a good mix of Skins fans, Eagles fans, Cowboys fans.  But also mixed in the crowd were Giants, Niners, Ravens, and Steelers fans.  The NFL was well represented and it was GREAT.  We love connecting and meeting new fans to share commonality and argue differences.  It was FANtastic!  What more could I ask for, wings, libation and football being the backdrop to a crowded sports bar.  I kept a close eye on the Skins/Eagles, as well as the Giants/Bills game, but the game that intrigued me the most was the Lions/Niners contest.  This was a great back and forth between the two surprise teams.  Of course we know the outcome by now:  the Niners edged the Lions, giving the Detroit team their first loss of the season. But after the game is what everyone can’t stop talking about:  one coach going after the other because of a handshake and a pat on the back?  C’mon Man (yeah, I stole that).  But seriously, are you kidding me.  Here’s my take on it.  One coach was vexed by the loss and the manner in which his team lost and the winning coach was HYPED that his team pull out a win in such a competitive game.  That’s it, case closed.  You got to learn how to stay out your feelings in the NFL, Win or Lose!  I was also happy to see the Bucs rebound from last week’s loss to take out the Saints.  But the most bizarre thing about the game was the coach got injured?  I saw Sean Payton getting carried off the field like he was playing.  I heard of being a player’s coach, but I think he took it a bit too far.  Anyway, we wish Coach Payton a speedy recovery.  Regarding the Cowboys/Pats game, I think the photographic evidence says it all.

Note to Jason Garrett:  If you are going to have Tony ROmo as your QB, you might as well let him be who he is.  If you don’t trust him, get him off the field.  Mr. Garrett, you should be ashamed of yourself calling a shuffle pass on 3rd down with over two minutes left in the game.  YOU ARE PLAYING AGAINST TOM FREAKIN BRADY!

LADIES VS FELLAS WEEK 3!

I’m very sad to say that this league is starting to be She Said Fantasy Football League. The Men lost another head to head match up and our record is now 1-2 against the Ladies (Shout out to Domin8 Trix). We are being outscored by the Women 1571 to 1505 and we are tied in overall win loss record at 6-6. We have TWO teams in the He Said Division that have yet to win a game, but I won’t mention them by name but they know who they are. I’ve been singing this same song for THREE WEEKS now: WE gotta do better, the Ladies are killing us! Continue reading
