2012 Preview: Denver Broncos

The 2012 Denver Broncos have kicked off the year making major moves!  Peyton Manning is the most important player in football, making the Broncos one of the most popular teams in the league.  It was not just enough to bring in Manning, but Denver had to put the right pieces around their new QB to give them a chance to be successful this season.  Last year, the team was led by the great running game of by former QB Tim Tebow and running back Willis McGahee. The Broncos had one of the best running attacks in the NFL, all while having one of the worst passing attacks.  Manning is better than Tebow will ever be, but he is coming off of a devastating neck injury that many tought would send him to retirement.  Nowadays, he claims he’s as good as new.  If Manning returns to his old ways, Denver will be instant contenders for AFC champs.  He is the key to the Broncos success.  We all can’t wait to see what’s going to happen in the Mile High City.  Here is more about the 2012 Denver Broncos.

Fantasy Football Studs:  Clearly the team has upgrades at QB, and I so badly want to name Peyton Manning as a fantasy stud quarterback, but no one can make that call now.  However, this man is a legend, and he will undoubtedly make the players around him better.  But it’s hard to name anyone on this team as stud material.  We are talking about a team whose leading receiver last year caught 44 balls for 612 yards.  That’s atrocious!  Not to slight Eric Decker and Demayius Thomas, who are definitely fantasy sleepers this year because of Manning.  The only individual that might be considered a stud would be Willis McGahee, and that’s only because he ran for close to 1200 yards last year.  That probably would have been more had it not been for Tebow running the ball instead of passing the ball.  McGahee will definitely have more chances to carry the football, but he is a bit long in the tooth.  The biggest fantasy stud for the Broncos will be the defense.  Even though they lost Brian Dawkins, they still are full of players that can get it done.  This includes Champ Bailey (who still has shutdown ability); and ball-hawks, Elvis Dumervil on the front four, and 2nd year linebacker, Vonn Miller.

Areas of Strength:  The Broncos have a  couple of strengths, but the biggest strength is that defense.  It was the defense (not Tim Tebow) that was the most significant reason that Denver made the playoffs.  No offense of the new Jet. The defense struggled the first half of the season, mainly because of injuries and an ineffective offense.  But in 5 of the last 8 games, they not only won, but they held their opponents below 14 points.  This season, they are fully healthy, and they are hungry.  This maybe the best defense that Peyton Manning has ever had in his career.

Area of Weakness:  This team really struggled last season in the passing game. And without stating the obvious, it caused the receivers to struggle.  So going into this season, the weakest area are the receivers.  Last year, Eric Decker led the team with 612 receiving yards and Demayius Thomas was second with 551.  There are no other receivers from last year that need to be mentioned.  Of course because of the new quarterback, they will be upgraded.  But they also added some other vital pieces like TEs  Jacob Tamme and Joel Dreessen, who will open up the field.  If the passing game is what they expect it to be, weaknesses will be hard to find in Denver.

2012 Marquee Matchups:   Seems like we want to see everyone face Payton Manning this year!  However in addition to division games, there are some pretty exciting match ups.  Week 1 Manning faces that Steelers Defense.  Week 7 he faces an old friend: Tom Brady and the Patriots.  After the bye week, its Manning vs Brees during Week 8.  Week 15 the Broncos head to Baltimore.  The Broncos have 5 games during prime time this year.  I wonder why.

Yeah We Said It (during the preseason)!

There are many reasons to love football.  It gives you action and adventure, comedy and drama, theater and live-action.  Many times it’s the things that are said about the game and the players.  Action is on the field, and off the field from fans, reporters, bloggers….sometimes from the players themselves.  Here are a few lines from us in the 2011 offseason (during the lockout).  Funny how things actually played out…

I love Chad, you love Chad…it’s the end zone that no longer welcome’s #85.

The WR core in Detroit starts and ends with Calvin ‘Megatron’ Johnson.  He’s the Lions best offensive weapon…..BAR NONE, and he’s only gonna get better.

“Take Ownership” of the offense is what Ravens GM Ozzie Newsome is expecting of QB Joe Flacco this year in Baltimore.  Joe may be Cool and he may be the best QB the Ravens have ever had, but this is a RUNNING team! Torrey Smith (University of MD: Stand Up) is the rookie WR drafted this offseason.  At 6’1, 204lbs, the Ravens will look to Smith to be the HUGE, PHYSICAL deep threat.  Continue reading

HE SAID She Said FANTASY FOOTBALL Ladies vs Fellas

Hey Ladies! What a way to kick off the season. In the face of ill-advised, chauvinistic talk you showed up just like I knew you would: LEADING THE WAY! While I’m sure the fellas will try to down play it as “just week 1” please believe if it were one of them on top we’d hear all about it!

Shout outs and Congratulations to the top ranking team amongst the ladies and the whole league: Domin8trix who scored a dominating 126 points. Closely behind is my girl, Girl Behaving Badly with an impressive 124 points. All of the ladies but one (I will make y’all proud next week!) scored well over the 100 point mark, only 2 guys did that this week. They won’t admit it but I’m sure they will be worried the weeks they play a skirt!

Fellas, we had an OK start in Week 1. Yes, we have a better combined record than the ladies at 3-2 (shout out to Dnasty, Jacksonville Swaguars, and Mo Risen), and yes, we won our head to head matchup for the week (way to handle biz Mo Risen!). BUT, we were outscored by the ladies 525-444!! Fellas–we got to do better. Remember this is for bragging rights! AND if we lose out to the ladies, I WILL NEVER HEAR THE END OF IT! (Ballers Unorthodocks: we are in this together). Continue reading

Mile High

If the Broncos don’t keep AND start Kyle Orton, they deserve to have another miserable season.  I understand that Tim Tebow is the future, but he is not the best option that Denver has at QB.  Orton has proven that he can be a starter in the NFL.  He proved it in Chicago and last year in the Mile High state.  In 13 games, Orton threw for 3653 yards and 20 TDs, AND he did it with some “just OK” receivers(Brandon Lloyd, DON’T BELIEVE THE HYPE).  Tebow showed some promise last season.  He had 11 total TDs(6 rushing), but he has yet to show that he’s an NFL QB.  Don’t get me wrong, I’m rooting for Tebow.  He was one of the best college football players ever.  But it’s a different world in the big boy league.  He still has a lot to learn.  Maybe the Broncos know what they are doing b giving him on the job training.  My take is, if Orton is the starter, draft him and play him as you see fit.  But if Tebow is taking the snaps, run far far away.  There’s no need to mention Brady Quinn.  He’s a non factor!

Von Miller-the Denver Broncos have been waiting for you!  Last year the Broncos were ranked LAST IN THE LEAGUE for total Defense.  The Broncos allowed an astounding 29.4 average points per game.  Wonder how?  Well with just 10 ints and 23 sacks, there was an air assault in the Mile High City!  A jaw dropping 390.8 average yards per game proves that Denver is where all QBs came to get their stats up last season.  But it doesn’t stop there.  The Broncos also allowed an average of 154.6 rushing yards per game too. Let me just say this: While Denver has made upgrades to the Defense during this years NFL Draft, it’s still not enough to draft the Broncos Defense when you do your Fantasy Football draft.

Last season was the best season in Brandon Lloyd’s 8 years in the NFL.  Passed around from team to team (San Francisco to Washington from Washington to Chicago and then from Chicago to Denver), it’s been a long road for Brandon Lloyd.  However, last year, Lloyd was awesome with 1448 receiving yards and 11 TDs.  I’m sure very few actually drafted him last year.  More than times than not, he made some Fantasy Footballers look a Waiver Wire Guru…I hate to say this, but I’m not a believer that he will be this great again.  Going into his 9th year in the league, with yet ANOTHER QB who happens to also be an experiment….I just don’t know about this one…I’d say, don’t draft him, but maybe keep your eye on that Waiver Wire again.  The success of any Bronco WR will come down to the success of Tim Tebow and that remains to be seen…

I don’t like any Bronco RBs!!!  Especially, Knowshon Moreno.  Nothing personal, but he’s just never been a consistent Fantasy player.  I guess he had a decent rookie season with a little over 900 rushing yards and 9 total TDs.  But last year, when you wanna see improvement, he moved backwards.  He had some injury problems, so he only played in 13 games.  But he only managed 779 yards and 8 total TDs.  I guess you can give the argument that the Broncos had to the throw the ball to try to win games.  But to win games, you need a good defense and a good running game, which the Broncos had neither.  Moreno is the best option at RB for Denver due to them having Correll Buckhalter, Lawrence Maroney, and LenDale White backing him up.  All of these guys are NFL washouts and Fantasy busts.  Denver will try their hand at free agency once the lockout is lifted, since they didn’t address RB needs in the draft.  So for now, do yourself a favor and stay away from all Broncos RBs.  I’m just saving you some heartache.
