Recently, I attended the game at FedEx Field when the Washington Redskins hosted the Dallas Cowboys. On the metro headed to the game, there was a young girl wearing a Brian Orakpo jersey. Another Redskins fan said to the girl “You look excited for the game!” The girl replied“YES! I love the Redskins! Me and my dad!” The fan replied back “Ahhh the old family curse. This is my dad (points). He got me too. Has he told you about the 80’s?” Everyone on the train burst out laughing and so did the girl…poor thing, she didn’t even get it.
I was all of 8 years old when I first heard my Dad sing “Hail to the Redskins”.We were riding in the car. My Dad has a great voice and I remember when he got to the part “Rah! Rah! Rah!” I laughed. At that point in my life, I already knew 2 things about football: 1. WE like the Redskins and 2. We DON’T like the Cowboys. Everyone in my family (except one cousin) roots for the Redskins.
One Thanksgiving we watched the Redskins play the Cowboys and I remember my grandfather, father, and uncle all being mad. I remember all the yelling and excitement. Oh, and that one cousin I mentioned? It was weird, she was clapping when the rest of US were mad. She boldly declared “I like the Dallas Cowboys!” Like she was coming out or something… I remember thinking she just wanted attention. WE don’t like them, remember?
I will say this about my cousin. At least she has liked Dallas since she was young, probably about 10 years old. What boils my blood and irritates me like no other are people who just magically like the Dallas Cowboys. It drives me crazy! Where do these people come from? Unfortunately for real Dallas Cowboys fans, these people make them ALL ridiculous to me. (Yup, I’m lumping them together…judge me!) These “fans” are some of the loudest, most annoying people I have ever met. Ask them to name 8 current Cowboys and they can’t get past “Tony Romo…uhhh Jason Witten”…YOU KNOW WHO THESE PEOPLE ARE! Find anyone on the street loud and ill-advised talking football, ask them who their team is and the Dallas Cowboys is that they will say.
Now, I’m a lucky girl, I really am. I’m thankful to have a wonderful support system in my life. I also happen to have the misfortune of being very close to several Dallas Cowboys fans. My very best girlfriend (plus her mom and sister for that matter) is a huge Dallas fan. Her mom used to host Super Bowl Parties back in the 90s when we were in high school. Her mom would make up her own Dallas Cowboys chats. One of my besties from college is also a since-I-was-a-little-girl Dallas Cowboys fan (along with her dad and her sister). Finally, my boyfriend, whom I adore, has this same ill-advised fan allegiance to the Dallas Cowboys. I can take listening to crap from these folks (and trust me I hear it). But at least they keep it true. Their team has had MANY a terrible season. When their team sucks, they admit their team SUCKS—and they keep right on supporting them. They have never ducked or dodged a conversation after a loss. Much can’t be said for the fan base they are apart of though…
Rooting against ANY team playing Dallas on Thanksgiving Day is a tradition in my house. Our family has extended and now we have grown over the years from bashing just my 1 Dallas-loving cousin, to bashing 2 cousins and my boyfriend. Tomorrow is no exception. Stay tuned for photos and fun.
